Circular Food Systems – Improving Food Waste Reduction and Recovery for Businesses

Join us for an insightful presentation on leveraging circular food systems to support Canadian businesses and institutions in managing food waste reduction, and explore how IC&I food waste diversion can create significant social, economic, and environmental benefits. The focus will be on the Circular Innovation Council’s current pilot projects in Ontario and Alberta, which aims to improve businesses’ access to circular end-of-life management for edible food and organic waste. Additionally, we’ll talk about how insights from these pilots are used in collaboration a diverse range of stakeholders to shape effective food waste policies, and provide a solution for local business communities to fight food waste.

How We Fight Food Waste

In this presentation, we’ll explore the urgent issue of food waste and how Too Good To Go is leading the fight. We’ll explain how our platform works to connect consumers with surplus food, reducing waste and mitigating our climate impact. Additionally, we’ll discuss innovative partnerships with local governments, highlighting how we can work together to create sustainable solutions that benefit both communities and the environment.

Speaker Biographies

Maggie Bain is the Food Waste Project Manager at the Circular Innovation Council (CIC), a national non-profit dedicated to advancing circular models of production and consumption for a more sustainable future. With her extensive background in sustainability, behavioural ecology, and human geography, Maggie designs and pushes innovative strategies forward that drive systemic change and improve societal well-being. Her expertise as a researcher in human-environment interactions and system dynamics allows her to understand how systems are interconnected and how we can implement solutions that create positive, transformative change.

Zach Shaben is the Public Affairs Manager at Too Good To Go for the U.S. and Canada, where he leverages his expertise in public policy and passion for sustainability to advance the mission of combating food waste. Previously, he worked for Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, gaining valuable experience in legislative strategy and policy development. With 4 years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives and 3 years at The Raben Group, Zach has developed strong skills in research, analysis, and effective advocacy. His extensive background includes political consulting and third-party engagement, allowing him to navigate complex policy landscapes with ease. Zach’s proficiency in agriculture, climate change, renewable energy, and strategic planning enables him to engage and collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders. He is dedicated to driving positive environmental and societal change through impactful policy initiatives and advocacy efforts.
